I Am Not a Trader

I’ve been thinking, these last couple of days, about geopolitical events. Wars, oil, inflation, lockdowns, supply shocks, etc.

Yes, interesting for sure. But why am I worrying about this?

Well, I’ve been thinking of selling my stocks and trying to avoid another 10%-20% or more correction in the market. I’ve been thinking about market timing.

I am not a trader.

My goals are to invest in quality companies, that pay a decent dividend. Yes, some growth would be nice too. So whether I try to find companies that are growing AND pay a dividend, or buy some dividend companies with half my money and some good growth stocks with the other half, is still to be decided.

But what I don’t want to do is day trade. I don’t want to buy Stock X because they had good news, and sell it 12 months later because it seems overvalued.

My intention is to buy stocks that are of good value today. And hold them for a long time. I need to focus on that.

The stock market has been going higher lately. I believe it was up 9% in July. And here we are in August, and it’s up again. I think traders are just looking for some relief. We seem to have passed through earnings season with most companies not having too many surprises. (Damn, Intel.) We avoided…

  • Down Only 4%

Since I only started this portfolio at the beginning of May and have been tip-toeing my way into the market a couple of percent at a time, I’m only down 4% on my portfolio. I consider myself lucky. Yet, that 4% still adds up to a lot of money on a dollar basis. Given a…

  • Down to 16.5% Cash

After some maneuvers, as mentioned in the last post, my portfolio is now only 16.5% cash. For all intents and purposes, I’m close to meeting my goal of being fully invested. Only a few more percent to go. I’m close to calling mission accomplished. I will find it increasingly more challenging to invest the rest…

  • The BABA Trade

To recap a trade that I put on: The total cost to put on this trade was $86.66 – $17.75 = $68.91 per share. I intended to “roll” this trade to the next 0.95 delta strike with 15 days to expiry for a $1 profit. It’s currently 39 days to expiry. As I type this,…
